Zebra printer labels skipping, how to fix it

Published: · 5 min read · Troubleshooting
What people report online: “Printer feeds 2–3 labels and prints on the gap,” “labels skip every time,” “only every other label prints.” This is the most common Zebra mechanical complaint after blank labels.

When a Zebra skips labels, the gap (or black-mark) sensor does not know where one label ends. Software can make it worse if the artboard size does not match the stock.

Software half of the fix: set the exact label size in free mylabelmaker (e.g. 4×6) so the job length matches the physical gap. Then recalibrate the printer.

Hardware checklist (do this first)

  1. Reload media, guides snug, print side facing the head, roll not telescoping.
  2. Clean the gap sensor, dust under the media path fools calibration (lint-free cloth / air).
  3. Run media calibration, hold FEED / use LCD calibrate so the printer measures gap length. Full steps: calibrate guide.
  4. Sensor type, gap media vs black-mark media must match printer setting.
  5. Print a config/test label, if it still skips, media/sensor still wrong before blaming the app.

Software mistakes that look like “skipping”

mylabelmaker fix: pick the real size (4×6, 2×1, …), match DPI, print one test via Browser Print. No Windows page-setup maze.

Still skipping after calibrate?

If the hardware test label skips, free software cannot “magic” the sensor. Fix media/calibration first, then redesign jobs at the correct size.
